Be Fruitful and Multiply

I know that this is a quote from Genesis but it applies to discipleship. God didn’t say be fruitful and replace yourselves, He said multiply. When Jesus was talking about bearing fruit, he was expecting thirty, sixty or a hundred fold if we are good soil for His word. Jesus never said go maintain the status quo … He is expecting us to grow the kingdom.

In Mt 28:19, Jesus said “Go Make Disciples”. He is expecting us to be disciple makers. Disciples make other disciples and if we aren’t doing that … we are totally missing the point.

I’ve seen a lot of folks that are engaged in “ministries” that are flat lined. They aren’t growing, they aren’t vibrant. They are just maintaining the status quo. What is worse is that they don’t even recognize that they are existing, not growing.

This isn’t what is expected of us. If our ministry isn’t growing, we should be asking … why not? If our church isn’t growing we should be asking … why not?

Activity isn’t the mission, making disciples is the mission. And oh by the way, we cannot let a demographic shift lull us into thinking we are doing our part. Just because people are moving to the area and inflating our numbers, that doesn’t mean we are making new disciples.

So each of us really have to ask some serious questions. Am I really doing my part? Am I using the gifts that God has given me to be good soil for His word? Do I live my life so as to attract other people to Him? Do I ask the Holy Spirit to flow through me so that the Kingdom of God will grow?

Am I doing my part to be fruitful and multiply?
