I was meeting with a new pastor today about STEPUP and whether or not it may have benefit for his parish. Prior to the meeting, I had spent time reflecting on today’s gospel passage. Jesus was talking about the kingdom of God being like a mustard seed. How it starts out very small but grows into a large bush. I realized that God often uses mustard seeds. Adam and Eve were the first mustard seeds, growing into humanity. Noah’s family, then Abraham’s family, then Moses, then David. Then Jesus and the 12. Each of these were pivotal mustard seeds that in their own time they build God’s kingdom from very simple beginnings to literally billions. This pastor was talking about some of the challenges engaging with his parishioners. I reminded him that at this point, he is a mustard seed starting very small. With God’s power and time, his parish will flourish. On my way home I realized that I too am a mustard seed. I am using STEPUP to try to reach others and share ideas that have taken me years to grasp. It hasn’t been hard to find people who like the book. I have had many people compliment the work, the style and the message. But what is most important is when the book sparks something in a person that allows them to become a mustard seed. Each of us has the potential of being a mustard seed. We are each expected to pass what we have learned to another person. Jesus only started with four, then it was twelve and then it was seventy-two. So if you are still reading, ask yourself … Am I really a mustard seed? Who are the four with whom you will share what you have learned?
