Laborers for the harvest

A couple of years ago, I was given an assignment to meditate on scripture each day and then make a journal entry. In today’s Gospel, Jesus instructs us to pray that the Lord sends out laborers for the harvest, because the harvest is great but the laborers are few. As I reflected on this passage a couple of things come to mind. First, we are all called to be laborers. We each have the mission to make disciples. That is why we are here. We are called to help lead others forward. That is the work we are called to accomplish. But the second thing that comes to mind is that work isn’t always easy. Work requires effort, patience and diligence. We have to be committed to the task we have at hand and be willing to put in the effort to accomplish the work to which we are assigned. The work didn’t end when the book was written or when even when it is read. After writing the book, I am now doing the work of reaching out to others. I am reaching out to you! I am merely one laborer in the harvest, and I am praying for more. If you haven’t read the book, read it. If it touches you, share it. Speak with others about it. Buy a few copies and give them away. Start a small group and discuss how the book can be used to create more laborers for the harvest. It may not be easy, work is never easy. But working to make disciples is the mission to which we are called. Investing of your own time in another person can be quite challenging, but it is also a blessing. Are you a laborer helping to harvest? If so help to find more laborers because the harvest is great but the laborers are few.
