Several years ago a short passage of scripture came to mind and it really has played a major impact in my life. The passage is Mk 1:17, “Come follow me and I will make you fishers of men.”
The reason this passage has been so meaningful is that I learned that if we are real disciples, real followers of Christ, we have to be fishing for others. As I reflected upon my own situation almost five years ago, I realized that while I had been working in ministry … I wasn’t personally fishing. The organization was reaching out, but I wasn’t. We were doing work, but it wasn’t really bearing much fruit.
As I pondered the situation I realized that there are three fundamental questions that each of us need to ask.
- Am I personally fishing for others?
- Am I personally catching anything?
- Am I willing to learn how?
Christ spent three years teaching the Apostles how to fish for followers. His was a very personal approach and He expected his Apostles to do the same. Jesus taught them how to fish, but the expectation is that they would fish and they would be catching something. This is the call to go make disciples.
So here is a thought. Spend some time in reflection. Ask yourself the three questions. Don’t ask about your church, your ministry or your organization. Ask about yourself and discern how to proceed!
