Daniel Stegeman from Focus on the Family is quoted, “Everyone needs a Paul, a Barnabas and a Timothy in their lives.” What Daniel defined is a spiritual family. We all need spiritual parents to learn from, spiritual brethren to walk with and spiritual children to teach. This is what Stegeman was referring to. When I first considered my own spiritual journey, I was really having a hard time identifying a spiritual parent. There were a number of people that I considered my spiritual brothers and sisters, those that I walked along side. And there were even fewer that I saw as my own spiritual children. As I wrote the book, I came to realize that I had dozens of spiritual parents, coaches and mentors. I learned a bit from each person as they were brought into my life. But the reality is I owed each of those people a return on their investment. I needed to pass on to someone else the spiritual DNA that they had passed on to me. I needed to be willing to take from my parents, share with my brethren and pass on to my spiritual children that which had been gifted to me. STEPUP is a series of self-reflections … things that I have learned along the way. It is an encouragement to reflect on your spiritual parents, walk with your spiritual brethren and pass on to the next generation … your spiritual children.
